MURPHY
âYou could ask Margo out.â Murphy threw the question at Teagan while they were driving him home. âIâm pretty sure sheâd say yes.â
âIâm aware. She already said yes.â Teagan grinned when he cheered them on and gave their arm a light punch. âI didnât want to wait until we were as old and grey as you.â
âRude. But also, she said yes?â Murphy teased. He was happy for his younger friend. Theyâd had a crush on Margo for a while. He frowned when he noticed the caution tape still littering the ground near the brewery. âWho do you think did it?â
âBertrand.â
âNo hesitation at all? Why?â
âMotive. How often do you hear on true crime docs about how they followed the money to the killer? Itâs a devil of a thing.â Teagan parked in their usual spot. They tapped their fingers against the steering wheel. âPeople do funny shite when theyâre afraid of losing access to their cash.â
âI doubt we can count on Bertrand getting into a row in the middle of the street.â
âYou let me worry about Bertrand. His girlfriend pops into my auntieâs hair salon all the time.â Teagan ran their fingers along the side of their hair. âMy dye job could use a touch-up. Maybe Iâll find myself there the next time she is.â
âSimple as that?â
âYouâd be amazed at what people natter about when getting their hair done.â Teagan shooed him out of their vehicle. âAre we open for business tomorrow?â
âThink Iâll take the day. The police donât want the pub open. Itâs not been that long. Weâre not going to be ruined if weâre shut for a week.â Murphy got out of the car. He crouched down to grab a stray bit of the police caution tape. âIâll probably spend the time cleaning up the mess the forensic team left. Sanitise the place.â
âWhy donât you let us give you a hand? Iâm sure Maisie and Graeme wouldnât mind either. Itâs why you employ us, after all.â Teagan made him promise to give his brother and sister-in-law a call. âIâll chat with you later.â
Once Teagan had driven off, Murphy decided to step into the pub. He hadnât gone inside since the police had taken him in for questioning. The mess wasnât as bad as heâd anticipated.
There was fingerprint powder dusted over multiple surfaces. Glasses were still strewn about; some had been knocked over, with sticky mead remnants on the floor or the bar counter. It wasnât going to be easy to clean up the liquid.
âWell, shite.â Murphy rubbed the back of his neck for a moment. He balled up the caution tape in his hand and took stock of everything. âMaybe I should call in reinforcements.â
Grabbing the large rubbish bin from the kitchen, Murphy dragged it out into the pub. He tossed the caution tape into it and began clearing up the trash. Heâd deal with the glasses next.
Heâd just finished with the first phase of his plan when the pub door opened. Graeme gave a low whistle when he got a good look at the state of the pub.
